Better to wait for an outgoing coworker's referral than start talking to that company immediately?

Not sure if this is the right sub, but I started a company with a friend. He previously worked at a Mag 7 company and pitched me an unrefined business idea. I liked the concept, helped refine it, and came up with most of the actual product flow. His background is in data analytics, so he’s been pushing for a data-collection feature that I personally disagreed with, but he believes will be valuable long term.
